Open House: Hippocrene Saxophone Quartet

The Hippocrene Saxophone Quartet celebrates ten years of performing together! For this program, the ensemble plays the music of two Central Florida-based composers whose works have been performed around the world: Alex Burtzos and Christopher Marshall. Also included in the concert will be the world premiere of a new work by Mark Piszczek, as well as a piece by Hippocrene Saxophone Quartet’s baritone saxophonist, Brian Smithers.

After a great debut with the Russ Spiegel Quartet in 2021, Detweiler and bassist Fumi Tomita lead a stellar quartet in a program of their original compositions in the Hard-Bop tradition. This show will be recorded for a live album – be a part of music history!

The sound of NYC’s bebop underground takes the stage at Timucua with the Aaron Johnson Quartet featuring master pianist Sacha Perry. Possessing wild musical imagination and fearless hearts, Johnson and Perry come together to present a premiere and exclusive selection of original music and songbook classics.

In addition to leading his own group in nearly every New York jazz establishment, from Smalls to Jazz at Lincoln Center, alto saxophonist Aaron Johnson has worked with notable jazz musicians such as Jon Batiste, Dick Hyman, Chuck Israels, Ken Peplowski, Connie Crothers, Slide Hampton, John Colianni, Ed Palermo, Pete Barbutti, and many more.

Sacha Perry was a protégé of the late Frank Hewitt and is one of the world’s foremost experts on the jazz piano canon of Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Elmo Hope, and Herbie Nichols. Perry has anchored nearly a thousand engagements at Smalls Jazz Club in NYC over the last twelve years as the first choice on piano, appearing with Across 7th Street, the Chris Byars Octet, Mike Mullins, Zaid Nasser, Grant Stewart, and fronting his own trio.

Live at Timucua: Ryan Devlin Quartet – Tribute to Larry Young’s “Unity” (live stream)

Ryan Devlin will bring on organist Scott Giddens, trumpeter Shawn Villanueva, and drummer James Fortune to play a full album tribute to Larry Young’s masterpiece “Unity”!

Ryan Devlin is a saxophonist and educator local to Orlando, Fl. He is a graduate of the University of Central Florida where he completed his degree in jazz studies under the direction of saxophonist Jeff Rupert. He will soon go on to pursue graduate study at the New England Conservatory. In 2017, Ryan was the winner of the Central Florida Jazz Society and was runner up for the Bob Washington Jazz scholarship competition.
