“Precious Gems,” by Joanna Tress (40 minutes)

About “Who mothered the corpse?”

She is found by a hunter one Sunday morning.
She lays, as though asleep, on the forest floor.
She has no name, but she had four mothers.

In a world where the dead are used without qualms by the living, the body of a beautiful young girl is claimed by four women: a witch, an artist, a whore, and a chef. Each allege to be her mother, and each have their own posthumous plans for her. Which woman will get to fulfill her desires? Who mothered the corpse? With the true possessor in question, a trial commences.

About “Precious Gems”

Precious Gems is a 40-minute one-woman piece of musical theater featuring seven original songs with vocals accompanied by piano, bass and drums. The character is an African-American woman who was born in the 1930’s and tells the story of several ill-fated attempts to be in show business before she finally gets a chance to share the music inside of her when she turns 50 years of age. Family and religious traditions, marriage to an alcoholic, and problems conceiving a child complicated her path, but there is a happy ending full of hope.
