Devlin-Perla: 50th anniversary of Steve Grossman’s “Some Shapes to Come”

March 2 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm EST

Jazz Series / Live at Timucua: Ryan Devlin, a 26-year-old jazz saxophonist, exudes youthful energy, while Gene Perla brings a wealth of experience having played with legends like Grossman, Coltrane, and Simone. When these two talents combine, they create pure magic. In this collaboration, they pay tribute to the iconic Steve Grossman album, “Some Shapes to Come.”

“Since I started my bachelors degree at University of Central Florida I’ve been listening to Steve Grossman almost everyday. He has been a major influence on my playing and compositions. In 2021 I got in contact with Gene Perla who was one of Grossman’s friends, sidemen and band leaders throughout his life. Perla and I have been touring and recording together since 2021 and have talked about paying homage to this iconic record since we met.

We will play all the songs from the record as well as some other famous Grossman & Perla compositions.” – Ryan Devlin

Ryan Devlin, a second-generation saxophonist and Orlando native, has had a love for music since he was a young child due to his father’s influence. He has played in The Florida All State Jazz band, The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, and The Orlando Jazz Orchestra. He was also the 2017 winner of the Central Florida Jazz Society Scholarship.

Ryan completed his Masters degree in Jazz Performance at The New England Conservatory in Boston, MA under the instruction of saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi in 2023.

Ryan’s newest record is a statement! “Can you hear me now” on PM Records shows the direction that Ryan is going with his music. This album is a combination of modal, swing, blues, funk and free jazz all put into a 10 song package. Join Ryan, John Lumpkin on drums, Thomas Milovac on bass & Anthony Aldissi on piano for a night of jazz that you won’t forget.
