Authentic Selves Poetry Reading & Open Mic

February 19, 2023 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm EST

February featured poet: “Big” John Study was born Johnnie Ridley Jr. in Flatbush, Brooklyn in an Afro-Caribbean community. He attributes the time he spent attending a private school in grades K-7 as the only person of color, and having two extremes to draw from, as the basis for his unique insight and view point. After marriage and being a devoted servant of YAH for over 15 years, John was given a new song in his heart…New stories, new words, new testimonies, all based on deep insight and reflection. He is god’s self-proclaimed favorite poet, and knows his energy when on the mic is unmatched! His journey began with early explorations as a DeeJay and Human Beatbox at age 10. By age 11, he was committed to being a lyricist, and rapping witty verses full of punchlines. He has been a husband and father from an early age, and enjoys the responsibilities of both. John aspires in his performances to deliver poems that tug at the listener’s heartstrings.

Timucua’s monthly poetry and open mic series, Authentic Selves. Held the third Sunday of every month at Timucua. Hosted by Lauren White and Nadia Garzon.
