Authentic Selves Poetry Reading & Open Mic

Timucua’s monthly poetry and open mic series, Authentic Selves. Held the third Sunday of every month at Timucua. Hosted by Lauren White and Nadia Garzon.

This month’s event, Authentic Selves BILINGUAL EDITION is organized in Partnership with Descolonizarte TEATRO.

Featured Poet: David Peñaflor

Mexican singer-songwriter and folklorist. Singer-songwriter of various musical genres, he leans towards his folkloric roots, composing songs based on Aztec and Mayan cultures, accompanying himself with musical instruments of pre-Hispanic origin.

In his repertoire there are also compositions based on legends, traditions and customs that show the cultural diversity of Mexico. He is the director of the Mexican music and dance group Huitzilin. He has performed around Mexico, and in Peru, Spain and the United States.

From 1996 to 2001 he participated in EPCOT Center’s Mexican pavilion (WDW). He has been honored with the “General Emiliano Zapata” Artistic Merit Medal, awarded by the city of Cuernavaca Morelos, to distinguished Morelos residents abroad, and received the “2017 Folk Life Award” granted by the Florida Department of State.
