Alterity Chamber Orchestra plays new music by JG Thirlwell

Timucua and the Alterity Chamber Orchestra returns with new music by JG Thirwell, commissioned and written for Alterity.

This performance is free and open to the public.

JG Thirlwell, hailing from Melbourne and currently based in Brooklyn, NY, is a versatile composer, producer, and performer. In 1978, he embarked on a journey from Melbourne to London, eventually making his way to New York City in 1983, a city he has called home ever since. Thirlwell is known for his multifaceted musical endeavors and operates under several pseudonyms, including Manorexia, Foetus, Xordox, Steroid Maximus, Baby Zizanie, Hydroze Plus, Clint Ruin, and Wiseblood. He has earned high praise from Leonard Cohen, who regarded him as a luminary of his generation.

With an impressive discography of more than thirty albums, Thirlwell’s music is unified by its compelling dramatic intensity and its ability to conjure cinematic atmospheres. Furthermore, he has made significant contributions to the music industry as a producer, remixer, collaborator, and arranger, collaborating with an eclectic array of artists such as Karen O, Noveller, Excepter, Zola Jesus, Melvins, Swans, Nine Inch Nails, Lydia Lunch, Coil, Z’s, The The, Simon Hanes, Nick Cave, and numerous others.

The Alterity Chamber Orchestra, operating under the banner of Alterity.co, is an Orlando-based chamber orchestra dedicated to fostering a more thoughtful, inclusive, and diverse society through the realm of contemporary classical music. Comprising seventeen talented members, this ensemble has a steadfast commitment to showcasing the works of contemporary composers who are very much alive. Their exceptional performances have earned them accolades in reputable publications such as The New York Times, The Orlando Sentinel, and The Orlando Weekly. With an unwavering dedication to making new music accessible to all, Alterity.co proudly serves as the resident ensemble of the Timucua Arts Foundation.

Drawing inspiration from the likes of Alarm Will Sound, Bang on a Can, and featuring instrumentation akin to John Adams’ Symphony, Alterity.co has spent seven years captivating and challenging audiences in Orlando. Throughout this journey, they have consistently maintained a high artistic standard. Their mission revolves around the aspiration of forging a more inclusive and harmonious society through the powerful language of contemporary music.
