What’s a step sequencer?

Step sequencers are a way of programming electronic music. They divide a measure into equal units of time called “steps” and allow the user to assign note values to each step. They can be used for virtually any instrument, but are exceptionally popular for percussion and drums.

Making drum grooves in a step sequencer is easy and fun!

This video shows a drum groove being created in real time using the drum machine instrument in Bandlab. Each square represents a different sound and a sixteenth note in duration.
