What are extended techniques and can I use them in my music?

Extended techniques are considered any technique that’s possible on an instrument but falls outside of the standard set of techniques typically called for in most music. These techniques can range from key clicks, to tongue slaps, to flutter tonguing, to multiphonics, and beyond.

Extended techniques have been becoming increasingly common in the past sixty years of music history, however, you should use extreme caution when using them. Ideally you should only include extended techniques when writing for an instrument that you play or when you have access to a performer that is willing to help in the compositional process.
