Frank Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz” gets re-set in contemporary Puerto Rico in Paul Castañeda and Juan Cantú’s “The Wiz.” There are great ideas in Castañeda’s adaptation to make the story relevant — the Scarecrow has Asperger’s, the Tin Man is gay. Most important, the tornado is now Hurricane Maria.

After its sold-out debut concert in June 2018, the Fernwood Quartet comes back to Timucua, this time joining forces with soprano Samantha Barnes Daniel. They will take you on a journey that starts in the classical era, with Mozart’s dark and expressive Quartet in d Minor.

Born in Bogota, Girón grew up listening to his dad’s Spanish guitar albums but gravitated to rock when he taught himself the guitar at age 16. By age 17, seeking a more solid foundation, Girón began his classical guitar studies in the School of Music Luis A. Calvo in Bogota under the direction of Humberto Franco. Later, he studied music at the Pedagogica Nacional University, where he took classes with the great Colombian guitarist and composer Gentil Montana. His studies there included flamenco guitar and modern harmony with Martinez – three years after he first saw him play on TV! Girón also attended Great Lectures of Classical Guitar instructed by Eduardo Fernandez, Leo Brower, Tomas Patterson and Alirio Diaz, among other great maestros.

George Grosman

In late 2011, sponsored by the late great guitar legend, Larry Coryell, George relocated to the US and is now active on the Central Florida music scene: he works as a solo artist for Disney (mostly at the Port Orleans Resort in Orlando), he leads a jazz trio that is a fixture on the local jazz scene and most recently, he has put together Swing Boutique, a band specializing in what can best be described as "Continental Jazz" - anything from Django Reinhardt to Edith Piaf to musette waltzes.

Nicole M. Mitchell is an award-winning creative flutist, composer, bandleader and educator. She is perhaps best known for her work as a flutist, having developed a unique improvisational language and having been repeatedly awarded “Top Flutist of the Year” by Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll and the Jazz Journalists Association (2010-2017). Mitchell initially emerged from Chicago’s innovative music scene in the late 90s, and her music celebrates contemporary African American culture. Ms. Mitchell, has recently been named as the head of the University of Pittsburgh’s jazz studies program.
