December 9, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Sunday, December 9th
Works With Sounds Class: Harmony
2pm-4:30 pm at the Melrose Center (2nd floor of the Orlando Public Library, 101 E Central Blvd, Orlando, FL 32801)
Students should bring a pencil and paper or electronic device for taking notes and writing and drawing.
Composer Jeremy Adams leads this class which combines music making with computer science. This free class is open to all ages and skill levels. Students will create multimedia works of art using coding skills to sculpt audio and visuals. Learn about a specific topic through a seminar for the first hour, then apply your new skills and create a composition for the remainder of the class!
Examine consonance and dissonance through musical examples by composers Florence B. Price and Milton Babbitt. Use those skills to then compose a brief example of harmony which utilizes both consonance and dissonance.

Musical Examples:
Symphony in E minor by Florence B. Price https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jgJ1OkjnaI&feature=youtu.be

What’s a composition seminar?
-Our composition seminar is a weekly gathering of composers and composition students to share their progress on a composition project. The seminar is held on Sunday’s at 3:20 pm.
What kind of music would I be writing?
-Our class discussions focus on classical music selections from the 20th century. On the other hand, our class projects focus on broad musical concepts and are stylistically open-ended. So you can write any kind of music you’d like!
Am I good enough to write music?
-Absolutely! The purpose of our class is to show you that music composition can be fun for people of all backgrounds and skill levels (even if you don’t play an instrument). We will give you tools for each class that will help you better understand how composers think. After each class students are welcomed to stay for the composition seminar to share their work with each other.
